A bedtime "gut-flush" recipe is making the rounds again, some mix of citrus, chia, aloe, or Epsom salt, promising a clean sweep by morning. The viral framing treats it like a secret ritual. The research says something much less mystical: when these drinks actually work, it's almost always because of one ingredient doing the work, and it's not the one getting the credit in the video.
What the research actually shows
Start with what's genuinely linked to constipation risk. A 2021 analysis of NHANES data covering 9,519 US adults found dietary magnesium intake was inversely associated with chronic constipation defined by stool frequency, people in the second-highest intake quartile had 22% lower odds, and those in the highest quartile had 61% lower odds, compared with the lowest quartile (Zhang et al., 2021). A 2022 study of 883 adults over 65 in Turkey backs this up from the deficiency side: people with functional constipation had significantly lower intake of magnesium, fiber, fluid, and total calories than those without it, and low fiber intake specifically was independently associated with lower constipation odds as intake rose (Yurtdaş Depboylu et al., 2022).
