Do Active People Really Need 3x the Sodium? What the 2025 Review Found

Every fitness account says active people need way more sodium than the official guidelines suggest. A 2025 peer-reviewed review complicates that story more than the salt-loading content wants you to know.
This pairs directly with the kidney cleanse piece I just published, sodium is the other side of that hydration and electrolyte conversation, and it's just as prone to oversimplified claims in either direction.
What the research actually shows
The active-population sodium narrative usually goes like this: general health guidelines recommend 2,300mg daily, but that's for sedentary people, so athletes should target 3,000–6,000mg or more. This claim is genuinely common across fitness and performance nutrition content, and it's not entirely wrong, but a 2025 review published via Springer Nature's Performance Nutrition journal, specifically examining sodium intake for athletes before, during, and after exercise, states plainly: currently there is no strong evidence that athletes require greater day-to-day dietary sodium intake, because sodium losses are actively regulated via the kidneys and sweat glands. The review's key point is that it's the relationship between sodium and water, not the absolute amount of sodium alone, that drives health and performance outcomes.
This doesn't mean sodium needs are identical between a sedentary person and a marathon runner. Sweat sodium losses are real and highly individual, published data on team-sport and endurance athletes shows sweat sodium content ranging enormously, anywhere from roughly 200mg to 5,000mg of sodium per litre of sweat, depending on the person, the sport, heat, and training status. That individual variation is exactly why blanket numbers like 3,000 to 6,000mg for all active people oversimplify something genuinely person-specific. A heavy sweater training for hours in heat has meaningfully different needs than someone doing 45 minutes of moderate indoor training.
The physiological middle ground both camps actually agree on: during exercise lasting longer than an hour, especially in heat, replacing sodium alongside fluid measurably outperforms water alone for performance and cramp prevention, this is the mechanism I covered in the court-sport hydration piece. Where the evidence genuinely diverges is the blanket claim that all active people need 2 to 3 times the general sodium guideline as a daily baseline, independent of actual sweat rate, session length, or climate.
What this means for you
The honest, non-oversimplified version: your sodium need scales with your actual sweat rate and session duration, not with training-athlete status as a category. Someone doing 30 minutes of light activity in air conditioning doesn't have dramatically elevated sodium needs versus a sedentary person. Someone training two hours daily in Australian summer heat almost certainly does.
A practical way to get a real number rather than a generic one: weigh yourself before and after a typical hard training session. Each kilogram lost represents roughly a litre of sweat, and that sweat carries a genuinely individual sodium concentration. This is more useful than adopting a fixed daily target lifted from a fitness account, because the range across individuals in the published data is enormous, easily a 20-fold difference between low and high sweat-sodium losers.
If you have hypertension, kidney disease, or another condition where sodium restriction has been medically recommended, that guidance takes priority regardless of your training volume, talk to your doctor before deliberately increasing intake based on general athlete guidelines.
The biotype angle
Mesomorphs and endomorphs training at higher absolute sweat volumes (larger body mass generally means more total sweat, even at similar sweat rates per kg) are more likely to be in the genuinely elevated-need category, particularly during longer or hotter sessions.
Ectomorphs training at lower absolute volumes and shorter durations are less likely to need meaningfully more sodium than general guidelines, and should be cautious about adopting high-sodium protocols marketed at endurance athletes without matching that training volume.
Anyone with a family history of hypertension should treat active-people-need-more-sodium content with particular scepticism and get individual guidance rather than following a generic performance-nutrition number.
