Does This Antioxidant Stack Actually Help Recovery? What the Research Shows

Grape seed, bilberry, green tea, blackcurrant. This label reads like a walk through the antioxidant aisle. Here's what the science actually says these compounds do for exercise recovery, and where the evidence runs out.

As a former competitive swimmer, I've seen plenty of recovery products marketed on antioxidant content alone, with the assumption that more polyphenols automatically means faster recovery. The research is more specific than that, and I think the nuance is more useful to you than a blanket claim would be.

What the research actually shows

Not all antioxidant-rich plants perform the same in trials, and that's the most important finding here. A 2024 systematic review by Prieto Martínez et al., published in Food and Function, specifically examined berries — including bilberry, one of the ingredients in this formula — across 13 studies on exercise performance and recovery. The result was clear and somewhat deflating for the antioxidant-supplement industry: berry supplementation showed no significant difference in exercise performance, and only one of the 13 studies reported any recovery benefit. Interleukins and C-reactive protein, the most commonly measured inflammation markers, showed limited evidence of being impacted by berry supplementation post-exercise. This was a high-quality review with low risk of bias, the null result is a real finding, not a weak study getting lost in noise.

Resveratrol tells a more promising but still mixed story. A 2024 systematic review by Abidin et al., published in the Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, pooled 10 studies (238 participants total) on resveratrol and delayed onset muscle soreness. The findings indicated resveratrol reduces markers of muscle damage in some cases, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, and eases DOMS symptoms to varying degrees. Results varied substantially based on exercise intensity, participant demographics, and dosage. The review's own conclusion calls for more standardised research before resveratrol's recovery benefits can be considered settled.

Tart cherry, not on this label, but useful as a comparison point, has considerably stronger evidence. A 2017 literature review by Vitale et al., published in Current Sports Medicine Reports, found consistent evidence that tart cherry reduces pain and accelerates strength recovery after exercise, with decreases in blood markers of inflammation and oxidative stress across both strength and endurance exercise contexts. I mention this specifically because it illustrates that antioxidant source matters more than antioxidant content as a generic category, tart cherry's specific anthocyanin profile appears to outperform the broader berry category tested in the 2024 review.

What this means for you

The honest takeaway: this polyphenol stack, grape seed at 3,600mg equivalent, green tea at 500mg, bilberry, blackcurrant, cocoa bean, represents a substantial general antioxidant load, and antioxidants have well-established roles in long-term cardiovascular and metabolic health markers. But if you're specifically expecting faster muscle recovery or reduced soreness from this ingredient list the way you might from tart cherry concentrate, the current evidence for this particular combination doesn't strongly support that specific claim, particularly for the berry components.

Where the evidence is more favourable is resveratrol's effect on muscle damage markers, promising, real, but genuinely variable study to study. Don't expect a dramatic, reliable recovery effect; do expect a supporting role that's more consistent with general health markers than with an acute post-workout recovery claim.

The biotype angle

Mesomorphs in heavy training loads shouldn't rely on this polyphenol stack as their primary recovery strategy, sleep, protein timing, and training load management remain the higher-leverage interventions the evidence actually supports strongly.

Endomorphs benefit most from the general antioxidant and cardiometabolic angle of this stack, independent of the exercise recovery question, grape seed and green tea polyphenols have separate, better-established evidence for cardiovascular risk markers.

Ectomorphs training at high volume with elevated oxidative stress may see modest benefit from the resveratrol component specifically, but shouldn't expect it to replace fundamentals like adequate sleep and caloric intake for recovery.
